Five Reasons Juneteenth Matters More Than Ever in Today’s America by MTWBTB Magazine

Image
In a time when the political winds feel heavy and the cultural landscape is shifting beneath our feet, Juneteenth stands as both a mirror and a megaphone — reflecting our history while amplifying our ongoing fight for freedom, dignity, and joy. Its significance today isn’t just historical; it’s deeply present, deeply urgent, and deeply ours. Here are the top five reasons Juneteenth celebrations carry so much power right now: 1. Juneteenth reminds us of the unfinished work of freedom. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free — over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation . That delay is a powerful reminder that freedom in America has never been evenly or instantly delivered. Today, as voting rights , civil rights , and educational equity face renewed challenges, Juneteenth calls us to stay vigilant and continue the work.  2. It centers Black people in the national conversation about liberty. Histo...

When Our Losses Speak: Why We Must Pay Attention After the Deaths of Juliana Nzita and Kayla Huff - by MTWBTB Magazine

Image
There are moments in our community when grief does more than break our hearts — it sounds an alarm. The recent deaths of Juliana Nzita and Kayla Huff are two such moments. Two young Black women, gone far too soon, under circumstances that demand not only mourning, but vigilance. Their stories are different, yet the ache they leave behind is painfully familiar. And for Black people — especially Black women and girls — their deaths remind us of a truth we know too well: when harm finds us, it is often dismissed, minimized, or explained away before it is ever fully understood. Juliana Nzita’s passing, marked by unanswered questions and a timeline that never quite settled into clarity, reflects a pattern we’ve seen before. When Black women go missing, when their safety is compromised, when their lives are endangered, the urgency we deserve is rarely the urgency we receive. The gaps in communication, the inconsistencies, the sense that something is off — these are not just details. They a...

Carrying the Country in My Chest: Navigating This Political Moment as an Empath - by MTWBTB

Image
As an empath , I’ve always felt the world a little louder, a little closer, a little deeper than most people around me. But in the United States right now — under an administration defined by rapid shifts, polarization, and constant emotional turbulence — that sensitivity has become both a weight and a compass. I can feel the collective anxiety before I even open my phone. I can sense the tension in conversations that never mention politics. It’s like the emotional climate of the country has settled into my chest. And I know I’m not alone. A 2024 survey from the American Psychological Association found that 77% of Americans feel significant stress about the future of the nation. That statistic doesn’t surprise me. I feel that stress in the people I love, in the women I serve through my work, and in the communities I move through every day. When the country is anxious, my body knows it before my mind does. Political psychologists and mental health experts have been clear: the current ...
