First Black Woman Confirmed by Senate to 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
Tuesday, December 13th, U.S. Magistrate Judge Dana Douglas, of New Orleans was confirmed as the first Black female judge to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The U.S. Senate voted 65-31 to confirm Douglas, who will be working out of the 5th Circuit courthouse on Lafayette Square in New Orleans.
There are only 10 Black women, out of 293 federal appeals court judges serving today throughout the country.
U.S. Rep. Troy Carter, D-New Orleans, said in a statement after the Senate’s vote, “Judge Douglas’ confirmation to the Fifth Circuit is undoubtedly historic, but she additionally has the experience, temperament, and integrity to also be a historic judge on the Fifth Circuit,”
